Luca BANSZERUS - Quantum Transport in 2D Materials
PhD Position in Quantum Transport in 2D Materials
Job vacancy starting: 01 September 2025 | Working hours: 30.00 | Classification CBA: §48 VwGr. B1 Grundstufe (praedoc)
Are you fascinated by quantum phenomena in novel materials? Are you eager to push the boundaries of experimental condensed matter physics and quantum science? If you are a motivated physicist who thrives in a collaborative environment and is passionate about groundbreaking research, then join the Quantum Transport Lab, which is part of the Nanomagnetism and Magnonics Research Unit at the University of Vienna. We are a young and motivated team of researchers working on quantum transport in low dimensional materials. More information on our research can be found here: https://quantumtransport.univie.ac.at
Your personal sphere of influence:
As a PhD student in our group, you will be focusing on quantum transport phenomena such as superconductivity, chiral transport, and quantum entanglement in nanoscale devices based on bilayer graphene and van der Waals heterostructures. This includes utilizing advanced nanofabrication techniques to create sophisticated quantum devices and conducting low-temperature transport measurements at millikelvin temperatures to elucidate their electronic properties. During your PhD, you will be closely mentored by Ass.-Prof. Luca Banszerus.
The Quantum Transport Lab participates in the Vienna Doctoral School in Physics (VDSP), which offers extensive opportunities to grow your skills and engage with the local and international research community.
Your future tasks:
- You actively participate in research, teaching & administration, which means:
- Fabricating and characterizing nanoscale quantum devices based on 2D materials.
- Performing electrical measurements at millikelvin temperatures, analyzing and interpreting experimental data.
- Presenting your research at international conferences and through publications in scientific journals.
- We expect you to finalize your dissertation agreement within 12-18 months.
- Independent teaching of courses defined by the collective agreement (e.g. as a tutor for exercises or lab courses).
- You take on administrative tasks in research, teaching and administration.
- Participating actively in the scientific community within QTL, the University of Vienna, and international collaborations.
This is part of your personality:
- You hold a Master’s degree or Diploma in Physics.
- You are naturally curious and have a strong interest in quantum physics and condensed matter physics.
- Experience in nanofabrication techniques, and/or low-temperature experiments is beneficial.
- You have an excellent command of English, both spoken and written.
- You have strong communication skills and thrive within a collaborative environment.
What we offer:
- The employment duration is 3 years. Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to 3 years if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a declaration of non-extension.
- Inspiring working atmosphere: You will become an integral part of our young, international and motivated team of researchers at QTL. We are looking forward to your ideas and input on shaping our research journey and offer a healthy and fair working environment.
- Opportunities to grow and learn: You will continuously extend your skillset through choosing from more than 600 courses offered by the University of Vienna, close mentorship by our experienced researchers, and participation in workshops and seminars.
- Cutting edge research: You will work on a topic at the frontiers of condensed matter physics and your research will answer pressing questions in our field. QTL is a modern lab with access to state-of-the-art facilities.
- Equal opportunities for everyone: We are looking forward to diverse personalities in our Team!
- Fair salary: The basic salary of EUR 3714,80 (on a full-time basis, 14 times per year) increases if we can credit professional experience.
It is that easy to apply:
Please submit your application including your
- scientific CV,
- a summary of your research experience,
- a short statement of your future research interests,
- transcripts of records, and
- contact information for two references
through our job portal.
