"How to get started: university teaching"

Q&A with Claas Abert and Timon Hellmann

Wednesday, 27 Jan 2021

10:00

Claas Abert, awardee of the "Prize for Good Teaching 2020" of the Physics Student Council will share his insights in a short keynote speech and discuss, together with senior sophomore Timon Hellmann and the VDSP students, their experience in teaching at university.

Dr. Claas Abert received his PhD in 2013 from the University of Hamburg, Germany, working on discrete mathematical concepts in micromagnetic computations. Since then he has been working as a postdoc on the development and application of micromagnetic code at the TU Wien and the University of Vienna. In 2019 he received his habilitation from the University of Vienna in computational physics and since 2020 he is a senior scientist in the physics of functional materials group. In the category "lecture course" he was awarded with the "Prize for Good Teaching 2020" of the Physics Student Council of the University of Vienna.

Timon Hellmann received his Bachelors degree in 2019 from the University of Vienna, analysing interstrip resistance and high voltage stability of silicon strip sensors at the Institute of High Energy Physics (HEPHY). Since then he is a master student at the University of Vienna and currently working at the Stefan Meyer Institute for Subatomic Physics (SMI). In 2019 he became part of the Basic Experimental Physics Training and University Didactics group at the University of Vienna. Since then he has been working as a senior sophomore for the exercise courses Experimental Physics I and II.

"Countdown to 2021 - end the year with science"

Award Ceremony of the photo competition

Wednesday, 27 Jan 2021

16:00

In January 2021 we invited the VDSP community to vote for the most inspirational image and most informative story among the images presented in the "Countdown to 2021 - end the year with science". The winning entries will be publicly announced by Prof. Markus Arndt during this online ceremony.

"PhD - what next? Sensors research and development in industry"

VDSP alumnus talk by Filippo Fedi

Wednesday, 27 Jan 2021

following the award ceremony

VDSP alumnus Dr. Filippo Fedi will give a short overview on his academic background, current professional role and his personal experience and perspective on the transition from basic science to a job outside academia

During his studies, Dr. Filippo Fedi focused on nanotechnology. Under the supervision of Prof. Thomas Pichler he achieved a PhD in solid state physics employing spectroscopic techniques to study the behaviour of materials during the gas sensing. In his research fellowship in the Italian National Research Council (CNR), the former VDSP student vice-speaker developed, together with his colleagues, a prototype of biodegradable battery made with graphene and gelatin. In his last project at the Austrian Institute of Technology, he was responsible of a groundbreaking "Internet of Things (IoT)" project: an electronic nose. Currently, he is a R&D engineer at Bioconservacion, in Barcelona. His main professional activities are developing IoT products and project managment.

"CV check"

Drop-in sessions with ChristianeM Losert-VK

Thursday, 28 Jan 20201

09:00

11:30

In these drop-in sessions Christiane will give feedback on your academic CVs and/or resumés and discuss questions on career planning. Please send your documents to christiane.losert@univie.ac.at before Tue, 26 Jan.

Dr ChristianeM Losert-Valiente Kroon, managing director of the VDSP, holds a PhD degree in Physics from UCL, London. In 2010 she joined the Vienna Doctoral Program on Complex Quantum Systems (CoQuS) as the  coordinator of the joint training programme in quantum science at the University of Vienna and TU Wien. She has supported the founding and implementation of the Vienna Doctoral School in Physics (VDSP). Christiane Losert has a passion for communicating science and is committed to the professional development of early career researchers.

"Well-being in times of COVID-19"

Drop-in sessions with Desiree Dickerson

Thursday, 28 Jan 2021

10:00

13:00

These drop-in sessions are a safe space to share challenges and explore solutions amongst colleagues and with someone who specialises in the mental health and well-being of academics. Within an online meeting space, we will touch on different general themes to start the session (10 mins) and then open the floor to the students so they can bring up questions relating to their work and workload, their supervision interactions and challenges, productivity and procrastination, motivation, perfectionism, doubts, fears and concerns.

Desiree Dickerson PhD is a clinical psychologist who specialises in the mental health and well-being of the research community. As a former postdoc in the neurosciences, Desiree works globally with universities, lab groups, and academics in the pursuit of a healthier approach to research.

She helps researchers at all stages of career to identify self-critical and self-sabotaging thought processes that underlie perfectionism, imposter syndrome, worry, low motivation, and uncertainty and begin to reframe them. She also helps them to identify maladaptive coping strategies (e.g. avoidance and procrastination) that tend to impede their success, and explore more effective (and healthier) short and long-term strategies.

You can find more about her on her website www.desireedickerson.com/institutions
