All participants need to apply by Sunday, 24 November 2019, via the online application form.

Thanks to the generous support of the ESI and the VDS Physics, there are no registration fees. Coffee and small refreshments will be provided during the coffee breaks.

In order to enable intensive interactions between students and speakers the number of attendees is limited. Participants will be selected by the organising committee based on their science career track, their academic achievements and motivation.

If you are

  • a student or staff member at the University of Vienna
  • a student of the doctoral programme DKPI affiliated with the TU Wien, HEPHY or SMI
  • a student of the doctoral programme CoQuS affiliated with the TU Wien, IQOQI Vienna or IST Austria

please upload your CV and a short statement of motivation explaining why your participation in the winter school would be beneficial for your research project and/or career development.

If neither of the above affiliations do apply to you please, in addition, ask your thesis advisor or group leader to submit a letter of support.

Notifications on the allocation of places will be sent in early December 2019.


Participants are encouraged to attend all modules. All students are supposed to take the introduction.

  • ML in Materials Science (12-13 Feb)
  • Case Studies (14 Feb)
  • ML in Quantum Science (17-18 Feb)
  • ML in Particle Physics (19-20 Feb)

Please bring your own laptop to the exercise classes.

Student support

We will support a small number of postgraduate students who otherwise would not be able to attend the winter school contributing towards their travel and accommodation costs with a per diem of 50 EUR for each day of attendance (maximum 11 days).

Particular attention will be given to students who are from groups that are underrepresented in Physics.

You will be informed on the outcome of your application in early December 2019.
