Mobility fellowships

International travel to connect with inspiring and knowledgeable researchers is an important factor for the personal and career development of our doctoral candidates.
In particular, our students have profited from mid-term stays at Stanford University, Harvard University, MIT, University of California at Berkeley, Columbia University, ENS/Paris, Imperial College/London, University of Queensland, Oxford University, Ludwig Maximilians University/MPQ Garching and many more.

Since the scope of the research projects, the scientific background and skills sets of the doctoral candidates in the VDSP programme are quite diverse, the VDSP allocates mobility fellowships in the amount of € 6,000.00 to selected VDSP students which they can freely distribute during their membership and spend on

  • Travel, accommodation and attendance costs for
    • Secondments to international research institutions and placements in the private sector,
    • Conferences,
    • Summer/Winter Schools,
  • Student specific research expenses.

Furthermore, all mobility fellows have the opportunity to take part in the research excursion taking place every two years.

Secondments and placements

Individual research stays for one to three months at international top-ranked universities or research laboratories are important factors for the personal and career development of our doctoral candidates.
Secondments have connected our students to international research leaders at Stanford University, Harvard University, MIT, University of California at Berkeley, Columbia University, ENS/Paris, Imperial College/London, University of Queensland, Oxford University, Ludwig Maximilians University/MPQ Garching and many more.
Thus, the Mobility Fellows can acquire new skills and methods which are not part of their local training and start new collaborations. Furthermore, placements at partners in the private sector are supported.

Research excursion

Every two years, excursions to international research institutions (e.g. CERN, DESY, VIRGO) provide mobility fellows with the opportunity to inspect the technology and work environment of large-scale research facilities and interdisciplinary scientific centres as well as to interact and collaborate with their peers outside the formal study environment.

Our intended spring 2020 research excursion to the Netherlands, where we planned to visit the TU Delft and the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in Noordwijk, had to be postponed due to COVID-19.

Application

All VDSP students who register for the Public Presentation at the Faculty (FÖP) within the first year after admission to the doctoral study programme are eligible to apply for a Mobility Fellowship.

To apply for a mobility fellowship, submit the application documents to the SSC Physics via email when registering for the Public Presentation at the Faculty (FÖP). The same deadlines as for the registration to the Public Presentation at the Faculty apply.
