Application procedure MSc fellowship

  1. Check eligibility criteria.
  2. Check available projects for a MSc research phase.
  3. Fill in the application form and upload supporting documents/video. Please note that your transcript of records must contain an official course description (=contents of the courses) by the issuing university!
  4. Letters of recommendation are to be sent directly by the issuer to vds-physics[at]univie.ac.at within the application deadline. Please note that it is the applicants' responsibility to inform their academic advisors about the deadlines and submission procedure of the recommendation letter! Letters of recommendation handed in by the applicant are not accepted.
  5. The VDSP office will forward your application to the researchers you selected as potential supervisors of your MSc research phase.
  6. In case you are shortlisted for an interview, you will be directly contacted by the potential supervisor.
  7. The VDSP office will inform you about the outcome of the application process shortly after the VDSP Selection Committee has reached a decision.
  8. Additionally, for incoming students only:
    • Please note that the procedure described above refers to the financial support in form of a MSc fellowship.
    • Admission to the Physic's Master programme at the University of Vienna is a separate process and an additional necessary step for incoming students. For more information on the admission processs please visit this website.
    • In order to apply for a MSc fellowship, it is not necessary to have started the study admission process. However, if you are granted a MSc fellowship, it can only be received once the study admission process has been completed.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. The call for MSc fellowships is open to students equipped to start their MSc research phase from any post-secondary educational institution inside and outside Austria.
  2. Before the start of the fellowship on 1 October, applicants must have earned 60 ECTS from Compulsory Modules (thereof 30 ECTS from Core Modules) in the MSc Physics study programme or from equivalent courses from other post-secondary educational institutions.
  3. A VDSP Faculty Member must declare their willingness to supervise the applicant in the research phase of their MSc study programme. Applications for the fellowhsip will automatically be forwarded by the VDSP office to potential supervisors for consideration. Applicants do not have to approach potential supervisors personally.
  4. Additionally, for incoming students only: 
  • In the call of 2024, our invitation extends to EU as well as non-EU/EEA citizens.
  • At the time of the start of the fellowship, applicants
    • Must hold an eligible higher education degree in Physics of at least three years from a post-secondary educational institution.
    • Must not have completed a Physics or another relevant master’s or diploma programme. 
  • Applicants do not need a proof of German language proficiency, however a proof of English language proficiency at level B2 to apply for admission to the degree programme is required.
